Peru - "In the Footsteps of the Incas"
Duration: 30 Days

Day 1 - Depart for South America
Fly from London to Lima with KLM via Amsterdam
Depart London 07.25am Arrive Lima 18.55pm
Transfer to Lima Hotel - first in country briefing and an early night
to bed.
Day 2 - Arrive in South America and experience
the vibrant and historical capital city
Lima - Peru's capital city with a wealth of historical interest. Also
an excellent introduction to South America; cultural orientation has begun!
Visit to the colonial centre. Group planning stage for the move to the
first project.
Day 3 - Travel by bus from Lima to Huaraz, a spectacular
city precariously placed in the mountains
Workout the Peruvian bus system and take a spectacular coach journey north
along the coastal desert and inland over the Cordillera Negra to the highland
city of Huaraz (2850m)
Day 5 - Prepare for the mountain project and spend
the day acclimatising in and around the city
A day in Huaraz for project preparation and acclimatisation
Day 6 - An Acclimatisation
day-trek up to 3800m, return to Huaraz Hostal for the night
For most, a first taste of high altitude walking and a valuable experience
to see how the body performs at higher elevations. Approx 6 hours walking
Day 7 - Locate the Project site at 3300m and prepare
for the project work over the next few days
Establish base camp - pitch tents, set up kitchen, toilet and communal
mess tent. This is home for the next 3 days. Finalise the project work
plan, draw up work rotas, train in the use of any hand tools, meet the
project partners, present the project aims to the local population.
Day 8 - 10 - A high altitude volunteer project, living and working with
the local community
Project Work, school refurbishment, painting classrooms
Days 11 - 14 - Inka Naani Trek, an undiscovered
Inca Trail through the high Andes
The first trek follows an undiscovered Inca Trail through the Andes. Guides
and pack animals from the local communities provide support for the group.
Day 15: Leave the mountains and return to the hustle
and bustle of the capital city Lima
The return coach ride to Lima leaves the high Andes and drops back down
to the coast.
Day 16 - Fly from Lima to Arequipa and prepare
to visit one of the deepest Canyon in the World
A 2 hour morning flight to the south gets us into Arequipa in time for
lunch. Free afternoon to explore this beautiful colonial city. Buy provisions
for the Colca Canyon Trek.
Day 17 - Enjoy an incredible journey through the
mountains from Arequipa to Colca Canyon
The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest in the world. Condors are seen
here regularly and the region has a thriving local culture. We drive by
private bus to the isolated village of Cabanaconde and prepare for the
Colca Canyon Trek.
Days 18 - 20 - Trek the Colca Canyon, descending
to communities of the valley floor
Descend to the valley floor, camp at an oasis. Walk along the valley bottom
through remote communities to the canyon's only football field! Play the
local team and overnight on the pitch. A big climb from the canyon floor
up to its rim. A tough day but the team will be ready for it! Return to
Cabanaconde
Day 21 - Take the bus to lake Titicca, the highest
navigable lake in the World
Colca Canyon to Puno - Another chance to view condors as we leave the
Canyon and head upwards towards Lake Titicaca. Impressive scenery on the
Alti Plano en route to Puno.

Day 22 - Lake Titicaca
A day on the lake! Visits to the floating reed islands and the British
built steamer Yavari which was brought up to Lake Titicaca from the Pacific
in kit form!
Day 23 - Puno to Cusco
Bus or train across the altiplano to the archaeological capital of the
Americas. Massive Inca foundations support elegant colonial buildings
to create a unique architectural mix.
Day 24 - Sacred Valley
A day in the agricultural bread basket of the Inca Empire. The fertile
valley was defended by the impressive fortresses at Pisac and Ollantaytambo.
Day 25 - One of the great train journeys in World
takes you to the base of Machu Picchu
A clickety-clack train ride to the Inca city that was "lost"
for 400 years.
Day 26 - Make your way up to Machu Picchu and prepare
yourself for the most surreal of settings
Exploring Machu Picchu and its surroundings, a magnificent and unforgettable
experience. Return train ride to Cusco
Day 27 - A rest day before the journey back to
your families in the United Kingdom
A free day in Cusco to explore and/or concentrate on buying gifts to take
home.
Day 28 - 30 - Flights from Cusco to Lima and then
leave Peru bound for the United Kingdom
Flight from Cusco to Lima and Lima to London departing in the afternoon
and arriving early morning
